What is indoor cycling?

Indoor cycling is a group exercise where participants ride a stationary bike to the rhythm of music under the direction of an instructor. It has been around for over 20 years and continues to gain popularity. Cycling is a low-impact exercise that is adaptable to all fitness levels and experience. The instructor provides the structure and form and the students adjust their level and speed to their fitness level. Cycling provides a “cardio high” that clears your mind and energizes you for the rest of your day. Riders report more energy, feeling great, improved cardiovascular health, loss of weight and increased strength.

Do I have to be in great shape or an experienced rider to participate?

No, indoor cycling is adaptable to all fitness levels and experience. Each rider controls the resistance and speed of the pedals allowing you to control how hard you want to work in any given class. Each class is filled with riders of all fitness levels and experience. Our dedicated instructors are there to guide you through the class, but you are ultimately in control of your ride.

How many calories will I burn during a class and how many miles will I travel?

Depending on how hard you work the average indoor cyclist can expect to burn between 450-600 calories in a 50 minute ride. During that amount of time, you’re likely to ride 10-15 miles. It is a fantastic cardio exercise that will give you more energy and help you lead a healthier lifestyle.

Will indoor cycling improve my running and/or outdoor riding?

Avid runners who have added indoor cycling to their cross-training routine, often report that indoor cycling “balances” out their leg muscles, putting emphasis on muscle groups not normally used during running. It is also a great way to avoid overtraining and provides a “break” from the constant pounding that can take a toll on the feet and knees. For outdoor riders, indoor cycling offers an opportunity to train in ways that are not possible out on the road. It is nice to be able to come in and ride inside during those cold, dreary winter months.
